Lawyer - Data Protection and Intellectual Property/Information Technology (0042)

Summary of Role

To lead and grow the firm's existing data protection and IP/IT practice, building on and developing the current client base and acting as an ambassador for the Firm generally. You will deliver outstanding client service, drive business development and marketing activities (including through social media) and develop and deploy technical knowledge and management skills.

Key Tasks

  • To advise clients and the Firm on data protection, freedom of information and IP/IT matters.
  • To support the development and implementation of the Firm's approach to knowledge management in the areas of data protection and IP/IT.
  • To be a collaborative team player, contributing to the work of other members of the division.
  • To lead and implement team marketing initiatives within the context of the wider Corporate marketing and BD plan.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Strong experience of the following:
    • IP (predominantly trademark registrations (both UK and CTM), general copyright advice, patent advice (but not applications), advice in relation to passing off and occasional registered design and design right advice);
    • IP exploitation (licensing and assignation of all main IP classes and drafting and reviewing NDAs);
    • Data protection advice (including advice on reporting of breaches to the ICO, drafting and implementation of DP policies and data sharing agreements, and DP training to clients and potential clients);
    • FOI advice (including advising clients on application of FOI exemptions and providing FOI training to clients and potential clients);
    • IT agreements (for example software and website development agreements, software licensing agreements, Wi-Fi agreements and mobile application development agreements);
    • Online law (for example drafting website terms and conditions and privacy policies; advising on distance selling and e-commerce related issues; and assisting businesses and individuals with online IP and privacy related issues); and
    • General commercial contracts, particularly in relation to arrangements which commonly have an IP component, such as franchising, sponsorship and outsourcing agreements, as well as agency and distribution agreements and the legislation relating to agents' compensation on termination of agency agreements.
    • Experience of procurement law and of public sector contracting would be useful but is not essential.

  • You are confident and you have a strong belief in yourself and your own ability.
  • You are committed to providing a good client experience and willing to put in extra time and effort when required
